Community Forum Website

Front Porch Forum (FPF) is an organization building a community through its social network founded back in 2000 by Michael and Valerie Wood-Lewis in Burlington, Vermont. What started off as a neighborhood email list has evolved into a statewide platform serving all of Vermont and some parts of New York and Massachusetts. Having 240,000 members in 200+ forums and serving 270,000 Vermont households, FPF enjoys nearly universal penetration rates in the state. It acts as a nationwide benchmark for civil, inviting local communities online.

What We Built

Fully featured community forum platform with geographic and topic-based forum segmentation, email digest service, post-by-email, member directory, events calendar, business directory, lost and found, classifieds, and mobile app. Built to enable connection between neighbors and engagement in the community.

Tech Stack

Ruby on Rails backend, Phusion Passenger 6.1.2, Nginx 1.24.0 reverse proxy, PostgreSQL database, Redis caching, Amazon Web Services (PaaS), Amazon ELB load balancer, Tailwind CSS (UI), Turbo (performance), jQuery 3.7.1, Select2, core-js 3.49.0, Goober, Font Awesome, Plausible Analytics, Stripe 3 (payments).

Business Model

Freemium with membership-supported financing. Free personal accounts; paid $550 annually for-profit businesses; non-profits/associations $275 annually; free for public representatives

The Challenge

  • line icon

    Geo and Interest-Based Segmentation

Platform had to be designed to operate on an area that covers all states (Vermont, NY, MA), including hyperlocal forums for every town and neighborhood. It was required to have nested geographical levels (state → region → town → neighborhood) and topic-based segmentation for various interests like gardening, parenting, lost pets.

  • line icon

    Accessibility through Email

Lots of community members were not tech-savvy or preferred email over apps. It was required to have daily email digest of forum activities and "post via email" functionality. 80% of all posts were made via email.

  • line icon

    Moderation

Maintaining civil and welcoming environment within community of 240,000+ users required automated flagging, clear moderation policy, and user policing. No serious security breaches happened since launch.

  • line icon

    Business Model

The requirement was to provide free personal accounts and get income from businesses and organizations. Subscription tiers and automatic billing and renewals via Stripe 3 were required.

  • line icon

    Scalability

Platform was required to manage 240,000+ users, 200+ forums, 45% weekly active users without performance degradation through AWS with ELB load balancing.
